Grose Valley – what a breath-taking view.
This painting is so real that it is as if you were standing there gazing out at this panoramic view. In fact, John Bradley’s paintings are so real that he has to paint his scenes back from the cliff edge. This is because he is able to create a great field of distance in his paintings. But he also has the rare talent of capturing vertical depth (dimension) as well. So much so that if John paints a scene at the very edge of a cliff people who suffer vertigo will actually feel giddiness and have dizzy spells when they look at his work.
When explorers, Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth, decided to follow the ridges and hilltops, a crossing was finally made. Imagine their delight when they came to views like this. Little did they think that 200 years later explorers (tourists) from every country in the world would follow their footsteps just to marvel at the splendour of the Blue Mountains. This stunning painting of Grose Valley captures the grandeur of the sandstone cliffs in the Blue Mountains. Shear walls of sandstone carved by mother nature show their splendour as they bask in the morning sun. They seem to rise up out of the depths below almost by magic.
John’s treatment of light on trees and foliage is unique. He uses a technique known as top lighting. He captures the rays of light on the young foliage of yellow’ pink and red when still in its tender young growth stage. John is largely self-taught and therefore has not been influenced by any past Australian Painter. John’s real love is the Australian landscape and he travels extensively in search of new material. He has been interested in drawing and painting for as long as he can remember. He is emerging as Australia’s most desirable artist.
